Myths and purported health effects of

A popular myth about distilled water is that it has the dangerous property of being more easily heated above its boiling point without showing the normal characteristics of boiling. This is called superheating.

In fact, superheating of plain tap water, for instance in the microwave, is just as great a danger as when heating distilled water.

Problems of distilled water

It has been suggested that because distilled or reverse osmosis produced water lacks fluoride ions which are normally added at a water treatment plant for its effect on the inhibition of cavity formation, the drinking of distilled water may conceivably increase the risk of tooth decay due to a lack of this element.

However, fluoride is not an essential mineral for the human body, so this claim is quite dubious. Regardless, most people continue to cook with common tap water and this is thought to potentially provide sufficient fluoride to maintain normal Prophylaxis in many instances.
